Systems Engineer- VWS and Tech Hosting Deployment
This role is in the VWS and Tech Hosting Deployment team and is part of the HPC & TI organization and overall a part of Projects & Technology SOM (P&T SOM) organization in Shell. The purpose of P&T SOM is to operate the Enterprise Technical IT Landscapes. The differentiating IT services that P&T SOM bring to the business are created by bringing together:
Staff in P&T SOM comes from core IT functions as well as business skill pools such as Geosciences, Petroleum Engineering, Engineering, Manufacturing etc.
VWS and Technical Hosting is a set of standardized, compact infrastructure and Upstream business application building blocks wrapped in a set of end-to-end services. It provides local hosting capacity and end-user access to the comprehensive Upstream and Technical and Competitive IT (TaCIT) portfolio for sites with network bandwidth or latency limitations and/or regulatory and JV partner preferences for in-country hosting solution.
The VWS and Technical Hosting service team currently consists of 22 people in a global team currently based in Houston, Rijswijk, Aberdeen and Bangalore. Candidate will work under the VWS and Technical Hosting Service Deployment Lead.
With the continued infrastructure activities, technology changes and some additional project activities that the team is accountable for, we are now looking for a VWS and Technical Hosting Deployment-Systems engineer.
Purpose of the role
The primary role of the VWS and Technical Hosting Deployment systems engineer is to:
a) Operate the Virtual WorkSpace (VWS) and Technical Hosting services on a day-to-day and project basis:
b) Act as interface between various Infrastructure support groups, application support groups and our Infrastructure Sourcing Providers.
c) Provide support where required, with focus on problem/change and incident management and 3rd line support level
d) Global end-to-end monitoring and pro-active problem management across all technical areas such as the interaction between our service components located in the different remote sites and global service teams.
e) Work very closely with the customers and vendor service providers to provide guidance in the effective deployment and use of our systems, products and services.
f) Assist the operations team to deliver operational services against compliance and service management processes.
g) Adhere to security standards, processes and procedures.
h) Follow ITIL standards and tools.
i) Maintain and/or exceed agreed service levels and customer satisfaction.
j) Assists in investigating, diagnosing and resolving problems and incidents as directed
k) Maintains a good understanding of the disposition and capacity of installed system components and the capacity.
l) Assists in planning and monitoring utilization and capacity management for current and proposed systems, including changes.
m) Stakeholder and Communication Management.
n) Participate in problem, service at risk and situation management where needed.
Driving continuous service improvement and efficiency gains through improved solutions, tools and utilities:
1) Capacity and demand management
2) Proactive usage and problem trend monitoring
3) Customer documentation and communications
4) Capture, maintain and improve service performance metrics
5) Contribute to roadmap development
6) Maintains awareness of existing and future service commitments and the configuration designs
associated with them.
o) Delivery of agreed release management and deployment activities:
p) Technical integration testing & global deployment of infrastructure and applications for minor enhancements (evergreening) and major upgrades
q) Deployment of services to new sites and existing sites following overall service lifecycle including planning, Development, delivery and (new)onboarding of infrastructure and application solutions, Maturation of the services.
r) Deliver Technical Hosting related projects:
1) For internal projects such as ever greening or service improvements, execute project tasks to insure
projects are delivered on time. This could also involve leading projects.
2) For supplier projects, work effectively with the supplier project teams to insure projects or new service developments are delivered on time. Represent Shell’s business requirements effectively and escalate issues as needed.

2) Maintain supplier and support interfaces on a day-to-day basis
3) Ensure delivery against compliance and standard IT processes (ie ITIL)
4) Ensure actions are in place to remediate service deficiencies
5) Deliver pro-active service improvements and efficiencies
6) Contribute to the delivery of agreed release management and deployment activities (infrastructure and applications) at a global level
Dimensions
1) Customer focused attitude; enjoy customer facing, be approachable and willing to take end to end responsibility for customer issues and resolutions.
2) Be able to work with various specialized multinational support teams to bring complex requests or problems to timely resolution.
3) Excellent communication skills in English, both spoken and written.
4) Good collaboration skills and good team working attitude. Experience in multinational/multicultural enterprises.
5) Ability to balance flexibility towards the customer with mandatory use of ITIL oriented processes and tools.
6) In-depth technical compute, analytical and troubleshooting skills.
7) Pro-active attitude, aware of new technologies and “know what the customer needs before they need it”.
8) Must have several years of Linux support experience. Experience with second/third line troubleshooting of storage/OS related issues.
9) Remote Site (Technical Hosting) Hi-touch support to ensure implementation and integration issues and problems are followed up and track to closure.

5) Fair understanding of the Exploration and Production business, or exposure to other technically oriented user communities.
6) Some exposure to technical EP applications and DB support
7) Knowledge of OS security, encryption, directory services, storage, networking and file sharing technologies.
8) Understanding of situation management processes: ITIL IT management processes (ability to operate stringent Change, Incident, Problem, Request, Asset Management and Release Management regimes)
9)An understanding of the Subsurface business, workflows, tools and processes would be a plus.
Experience and Qualifications required
1) Candidates must have a strong technical background in infrastructure service delivery on a global scale across Linux, placing equipment in Data Center, Networking, high-performance computing and thin-client technologies
2) B.Tech or Masters in Computer Science with 6-8 years of Experience.
3) Ability to prioritize, and make appropriate decision with a cost improvement mindset.
4) Ability to identify and realize opportunities for improvement
5) Preferred Technical Project Lead experience, managing small projects involving multiple technical disciplines and/or participating in large projects delivering solutions for Upstream.
