Background
R&D’s vision is to Innovate Boldly for People and Planet, underpinning our purpose and sustainability goals – and driving profitable growth through our Business Groups. In order to achieve this vision, the RDLT has identified the Digital Transformation as a strategic enabler thus a multi-year program leading up to the desired digitally transformed end-state of R&D has been created and is to be implemented.
This desired R&D digital transformation will require a streamlining of the development & deployment processes that deliver data analytics, simulation, optimization & compliance models/tools & visualizations. R&D has already experienced a significant uptake of the first generation of these models/tools and virtual simulations, which have provided clear proof of the value our people can create from combining digital technology, data and advanced modelling capabilities to increase speed, efficiency, quality and impact of our innovations. In addition, there is a growing opportunity to integrate some of these digital technologies into consumer-facing propositions to deliver value beyond the physical product and thereby enhance the overall consumer experience.
In order to deliver this vision, we need to step up our ambition in Technology, Data and Talent as the 3 Digital Enablers that will drive our priorities and investments:
Technology: IT systems, digital tools and analytical models used to create more efficient & effective ways of working; facilitating innovation opportunities by codifying scientific & engineering knowledge into algorithms for reformulations, claims substantiation, process optimization, etc. Data: Product, Process and Consumer related data generated internally, or harnessed from external sources, required to deliver faster and bigger innovation. Talent: New R&D skills around data science, modelling, advanced analytics and simulation, as well as digital consumer propositions and business models.
This transformation will require a new culture of ‘digital first’ to realize the vision of Science = Digital Technology. Standardizing processes that do not create differentiation will be critical to reduce complexity and drive ROI from Digital investments. The R&D Leadership will be instrumental at shaping this new mindset, setting clear expectations, reskilling teams and ultimately ‘own’ this transformation.
Purpose of the Role
Unilever’s R&D function consists of roughly 6000 people across key R&D centers in the US / UK / India / Netherlands / China and Brazil. The R&D IT Director is an influential leader who will work extremely closely with the R&D leadership team, UniOps Leadership teams and other cross functional leads to deliver the R&D transformation agenda described above.
Scope of the Role
The role covers the following areas:–
Partnering with the Digital R&D organization to drive the delivery of various programs and capabilities
Supporting the ongoing Safety, Regulatory, Claims, Packaging & Product processing activities
Being a key member of the R&D Design Authority /Architectural Principles Group (APG) covering various R&D projects
Driving the R&D digital workbench integration capabilities
Supporting delivery of eScience Modelling & Analytics activities
An integral part of the Enterprise Platform Leadership team partnering the VP to drive a number of horizontal initiatives
Ensure Enterprise Platforms is future fit with the right sourcing strategy
Build the visibility on the UniOps Bangalore Center to the UniOps Leadership
Contribute to the Employee Value Proposition of UniOps to attract and develop the Future Talent
Manage the IT Service Delivery and securing and managing the budget for global initiatives, ensuring funding sufficiency from the journey, function, divisions and / or ITIB
Manage the Annual budget for both programs and run of roughly 25M Euros
Manage technology stacks including SAP PLM S/4 , Siemens Active workspace, Dassault Lab Notebooks and other niche R&D tools and technologies
Build business case for each of the program and help deliver the benefits
Ensure system uptime, resilience and risks of around 90 application services.
Key Deliverables
Lead the R&D IT Digital Strategy to help further evolve the digital transformation within R&D Drive the design & implementation of the R&D Digital Capture tools Drive the design & implementation of an R&D Data Platform & supporting Data as a Service capabilities and Data Exploitation Drive the design & implementation of R&D model / tool development standards for R&D & cross-functional objectives Manage the resilience and cost optimization of the platform Invest in the development of the teams and talent with the required coaching and mentorship
Essential Skills
Over 15 years experience working in IT with over 5 years leading large digital transformation teams
Knowledgeable across all R&D IT technologies
Excellent communication, influencing, negotiating, mentoring & team building skills
Good skills in persuading disparate audiences at all levels in the organization – including R&D VPs
Excellent skills in explaining complex technical ideas & recommendations to non-technical audiences
Extensive knowledge of the supplier software selection processes especially RFI and managed services delivery models
Deep working knowledge of IT systems landscapes and impact of architectural decisions on quality and delivery
Ability to be aware of industry trends and guide the R&D organization appropriately
Understand the importance of data quality and data management
